Dear Customers,

Epson is working to improve the customer experience for new EPD controller designs. To facilitate this we would like to introduce you to our EU / US design support partner Visionect. Visionect offers production-ready EPD development kits with on-line documentation, guidance, training and support.

Visionect has supported EPSON’s EPD controllers for many years as one of our “centers of excellence”. Epson will transfer new EPD design inquires to Visionnect. Existing customers with active EPD designs will continue to be supported directly by Epson without exception until Aug 2016. This announcement does not influence production of our EPD controllers which continues unaffected.

EPD Controller

EPSON’s S1D13521 controller provides a high performance, low cost, solution for current and future E Ink EPDs (Electronic Paper Displays). The controller greatly reduces CPU overhead by providing many functions that were previously handled by the Host.

S1D13521 allows multi-regional and concurrent display updates resulting in highly responsive screen changes. This increased responsiveness finally makes touch pen support and on-screen user interfaces viable, opening up a range of new applications.

Additionally, the S1D13521 integrates support for current and future power management chips, as well as future 16 and 32 gray level waveforms. All this is achieved with a lower parts cost than previous EPD controllers making the S1D13521 a perfect choice for new designs and design upgrades.

S1D13522

EPD Controller

EPSON's S1D13522 controller builds on the success of the S1D13521 providing high performance, low system cost solutions for E Ink EPDs (Electronic Paper Displays).

The S1D13522 includes 2M bytes of stacked memory and features that greatly reduce the CPU overhead for EPD applications. Allowing multi-regional and concurrent display updates, the S1D13522 adds interface support for direct Touch/Pen drawing. Picture-in-Picture, Rotation, Transparency, and Hardware Cursor functions further increase the flexibility in delivering the optimal display experience.

The Advanced Sequencer Engine, Power Management, I2C Thermal Sensor, and optional Serial Flash Memory support make a variety of implementations possible. The S1D13522 is the ideal choice for new EPD designs and design upgrades.

Color EPD Controller

EPSON's S1D13524 controller brings color and large panel B/W support to EPD. The S1D13524 is designed with the latest EINK materials in mind, and supports the latest advances in gate and source driver technology. The S1D13524 is the perfect solution to high resolution, high frame rate designs. The built-in color processor is designed to minimize host processing overhead. It configures easily for each customer’s unique requirements. The color engine can be configured to match many CFA configurations with build-in dithering to further optimize the Color EPD image with low host overhead.

The S1D13524 controller connects to external memory and power management logic; separate flash and thermal sensors are optional. As with all of EPSON EPD controllers, the S1D13524 allows multi-regional and concurrent display updates. The S1D13524 includes support for Rotation, Transparency, Instant On functions.

Monochrome EPD Controller Module

EPSON's EPD Controller Module is a complete, high performance, easy to use solution for E Ink EPDs (Electronic Paper Displays). The module includes all the necessary digital and analog power circuitry for driving an E Ink panel. The module consists of Epson’s S1D13522 EPD controller, an on-board 26MHz crystal clock source, a 4 Mbit flash memory for command/waveform storage, and a power management IC (PMIC) with built in temperature sensor.

The module was developed to remove the complexities of board design from our customers thus reducing time to market and opening a variety of applications. The S4E5B001B000A00 EPD Controller Module is the ideal choice for new EPD designs and design upgrades.
